In-depth review

In 2019 I bought the Lofoten 1 ULW tent for my solo adventures. Since then, I’ve used it for several +7 multiday hikes, I’ve used it in the mountains of Norway and Sweden, and I’ve used it in both hot and cold climates.

The Lofoten 1 ULW tent is genuinely remarkable. It packs to the size of a water bottle and weighs just 500g (1.1 pounds). If you’re looking to purchase the lightest tent on the market, this is the tent for you.

The Lofoten 1 ulw tested during af 7-day hike in Kungsleden (Sweden)

The Lofoten 1 ULW will pack down smaller than most tarps will while still having the benefits of a tent – being protected from the wind, rain, and snow.

Pros

  • Worlds lightest tent
  • It packs down very small
  • High-quality materials
  • Waterproof (1600 Water column pressure)
  • Great ventilation
  • Easy to set up

Cons

  • An expensive tent
  • Very little space inside the tent
  • Missing a “indoor” cooking area.

Indoor space

You’ll sacrifice comfort for weight and packability.

The Lofoten 1 ULW is a tiny tent. I’m 6’2 (190 cm), and I can barely lie down inside without my head and feet touching the ends. The tent isn’t very tall either. If the air mattress you use is too tall, your feet will touch the ceiling. Furthermore, you cannot sit up straight inside the tent, which makes it a bit awkward to change clothes or blow up your air mattress.

When that’s said, sleeping in the tent is comfortable, and you’ll have plenty of indoor floor-area to store your stuff.

Cooking in the Lofoten 1 ULW

There is no inner tent in the Lofoten 1 ULW, so you’ll be unable to cook while being protected from the wind. There is, however a small tarp in the entrance you can lift.

What makes a good tent?

There are several factors I look at when choosing a tent like the Lofoten 1 ULW for outdoor use. Especially if I’m going to use it for several days in the mountains. Here is what you should look for:

  1. Size: Make sure the tent is large enough to accommodate you and anyone else using it, as well as any gear you will be bringing along.
  2. Weight: Consider the weight of the tent if you will be carrying it on your back or in a pack. A lighter tent will be easier to carry and transport.
  3. Durability: Look for a tent made of high-quality materials that will withstand the elements and last for multiple seasons.
  4. Ease of setup: A tent that is easy to set up and take down can save time and frustration when you’re out in the field.
  5. Ventilation: Proper ventilation is important to help prevent condensation inside the tent, so look for a tent with mesh panels or vents to allow for air circulation.
  6. Weather resistance: Choose a tent that is designed to handle the weather conditions you expect to encounter, including wind, rain, and snow.
  7. Price: Determine your budget and look for a tent that offers good value for the price. Ultimately, the best tent for you will depend on your specific needs and preferences. It may be helpful to read reviews and do some research to find a tent that meets your requirements and fits your budget.
